RESPONSE TO "Action for Change in Music Education"
There were many interesting and new ideas in this text. I liked how different perspectives were being showcased as well as different studies. One of the main things that stuck out to me was how it was stated that what is taught in school and the role of music in the average teenagers life are extremely different and this is what makes it so apparent who took music classes in high school. (Countryman and Rose, 2013, p. 50) The people who take music classes in high school will be much more educated Music because what kids are exposed to nowadays is completely different than it was decades ago. Something that I found completely surprising and troubling is how according to Bartel's study, only 5.7% of grade 12's take a music class although they claim that listening to music is their favourite thing to do. (Countryman and Rose, 2013, p.50) This shows how the media is affecting the youth. Kids are listening to music that is unimportant and that's why it is not taught in schools resulting in kids becoming less and less educated about music. Overall I very much enjoyed this piece of text and I liked how the author added something that was useful for a teacher who is reading. The author stated how it is better to focus on teaching the youth not about music itself, but our relationships with it. I thought that this was a really good way of stating it and was helpful to teachers reading rather than students. |
